Why do layered light sources often feel better than relying on one ceiling light?

Published on

One ceiling light on its own usually creates flat, harsh lighting. Everything is evenly bright, but there’s no depth, no cosiness. It can feel a bit like a waiting room.

Layered light sources – ceiling light plus floor lamps, table lamps, maybe a wall light or two – let you shape the mood. You can keep the ceiling light off in the evening and rely on softer lamps that create pools of light around where you sit. This makes the room feel calmer and more inviting.

Different activities also need different light. Reading on the sofa, working on a laptop, watching TV, or having guests over – each feels better with a slightly different mix. With multiple light sources, you can adjust instead of using the same bright overhead light for everything.

Layered lighting also lets you highlight certain areas: a nice artwork, a plant, or a console. That draws the eye and makes the space feel more thoughtfully put together.

Once you get used to using lamps and side lights, going back to a single ceiling tube light feels oddly aggressive.
