How can installing a simple door chain or latch add another layer of safety?

Published on

A basic door chain or latch doesn’t replace a strong main lock, but it adds a helpful extra step between “closed” and “fully open”. It allows you to open the door a small amount to talk to someone, receive papers, or check something without giving full access inside.

This is especially useful when you’re alone at home, when children might answer the door, or when you’re unsure about the visitor. If you feel uncomfortable, you can keep the chain on while you ask questions or decide whether to open completely.

It also adds a small barrier against forceful entry if someone suddenly tries to push the door in when you unlock it. It’s not unbreakable, but it slows things down and gives you a few extra seconds to react.

Combined with a peephole or camera, a simple latch becomes part of a layered approach to feeling safer at home.
