How can placing a small bench or chair in the garden encourage more time outside?

Published on

Sometimes the only reason we don’t sit outside is because there’s nowhere comfortable to sit. A simple bench or chair sends a quiet invitation: “Come and pause here.” It turns the garden from a place you only look at into a place you actually use.

With a small seat, you can drink your morning tea outside, read, watch birds, or just rest your eyes on something green after a long day. Those little moments add up, and you start appreciating the garden more.

A bench also becomes a natural focal point. You might place plants around it, add a lantern, or lay stepping stones leading there. Suddenly, the space feels designed rather than leftover.

You don’t need anything fancy. Even a weather-resistant stool or folding chair under a tree can do the job. The important thing is that you can sit comfortably without dragging indoor furniture out each time.
