How can checking inside light fittings on top floors reveal potential roof leaks?

Published on

On the top floor, ceiling light fittings, especially recessed ones, are close to the roof above. If water is getting in from the roof, it sometimes travels along beams or wiring and collects near these points.

By occasionally turning off power and safely opening or inspecting around top-floor fittings, you might see signs of moisture – rust on metal parts, water stains, or even droplets. This can be an early warning before water becomes visible on the main ceiling surface or starts dripping noticeably.

If you notice any such signs, it’s important to address them quickly, because water and electricity together are dangerous. A roofer and an electrician may both need to be involved.

It’s a slightly unusual place to check, but it often reveals leaks that haven’t yet shown up in more obvious ways.
