Structural beams and load-bearing walls are what keep your home standing. They carry the weight of floors, roofs and upper levels. If you remove or cut through one without proper support, you’re literally weakening the building’s skeleton.
Before you decide to open up a room or widen a doorway, it’s crucial to know which elements are structural. Architects, structural engineers or experienced contractors can help with this. Sometimes walls that seem “thin” are actually critical, while thicker-looking partitions may be non-structural.
Once you know where beams and load-bearing walls are, you can design within safe limits – maybe adding openings with proper lintels, or supporting beams with columns. This allows you to get the airy, open look you want without risking cracks, sagging floors, or much worse.
Skipping this step because “the neighbour removed their wall and nothing happened” is risky. Each home and structure can be slightly different.
So, understanding the skeleton first, design second.
