How can setting a clear “must-have” list help control renovation decisions?

Published on

Renovations come with endless temptations and suggestions. Without a clear “must-have” list, you can get pulled in every direction – new ideas from social media, sales pitches from shops, random inspiration at midnight.

Writing down your top non-negotiables before you start keeps you grounded. For example: “proper storage in bedroom”, “good lighting in kitchen”, “easy-to-clean flooring”, “one quiet work corner”. When tough decisions come up, you check them against that list. If a new idea doesn’t support those priorities, maybe it’s not worth the extra money or delay.

This doesn’t mean you can’t have any “nice-to-have” extras, but it stops them from taking over the whole budget. A fancy sink, decorative tile or niche lighting is fun, but if it doesn’t help your real everyday needs, you’ll regret choosing it over a needed cupboard later.

The must-have list is like your lighthouse through the storm of choices. It reminds you why you started the renovation in the first place.
